【Singer Che’Nelle】“Health is a Journey”: Che’Nelle’S Commitment to Wellness

2024.01.24

How do professionals who continue to challenge themselves in various fields such as sports, business, art, and culture approach their bodies and unleash their potential? We ask about the "conditioning" they practice in their lifestyles.

Our guest this time is singer Che’Nelle, who is in Japan and has decided to release a new song with Japanese lyrics for the first time in six years. She kindly agreed to an interview during her busy stay.

*Conditioning, as defined by TENTIAL, is the act of optimizing all factors related to one's physical condition to improve life performance.

My Important Job is “Taking Care of My Family”

── You mentioned that you are visiting Japan for the first time in a year. Could you tell us about your current activities?

The main purpose of this stay is to promote my new song. I'm staying in Tokyo for a month and a half. In the last few years, I have been preparing for a new project. Actually, the new song was finished two years ago, and I was thinking about how to release the song so that it could reach as many people as possible. Then, the label was decided, and things are now starting to move rapidly. At the same time, I gathered excellent staff and formed “Team Che’Nelle.” I am trying various things to get more people to know me and my songs.

Besides being a singer, another important job of mine is “taking care of my family.” I have a two-year-old daughter, and I am carrying out the grand (!) mission of taking care of my family while also doing my own work.

── Your husband and child are here today, aren't they? Has your life changed since becoming a mother?

It has changed completely. Every day is so busy that I have to divide my brain into five equal parts and operate each one on a different axis (laughs). To be honest, if I didn't have children, my freedom would be completely different. I would be able to think with a more open mind, have more余裕 in my heart, and focus only on myself. Of course, having children is a good thing. All I can say is that right now, “every day is a mess” (laughs). Of course, that includes fun things. I may be entering a phase of learning to “organize my life and prioritize.” I am still exploring the balance between work and family. I am continuing to challenge myself to find the optimal balance.

The most Important Thing is “Sleep”!

── What kind of place is Japan for Che’Nelle?

Yes. I currently live in Perth, Australia. Perth is a very laid-back place, the complete opposite of Tokyo! Tokyo has an overwhelming vibe and energy. It's completely different from Perth and has a similar feel to New York.

── Che’Nelle, a working mother who flies around the world while taking care of her children, how conscious are you of your own conditioning?

First of all, the most important thing for me is sleep. Ideally, I would like to get 7-8 hours of sleep and go to bed before 10 p.m. as much as possible. I heard that 10 p.m. is the timing for hormone recharging, so I try to practice it as much as possible. If I stay up late, my body won't recover properly, and my physical condition will clearly worsen the next day. I have children, so there are many days when I can't control it well, but I am conscious of it. While I am staying in Japan, it is very difficult to maintain these sleep rhythms, but I try to get as much sleep as possible.

I also work out three times a week. It's weight training. This three-times-a-week routine is one of the habits that I have been continuing for a long time, and I have never missed it. I do it with my husband, who is a professional dancer, and a personal trainer. I don't really like working out or weight training (laughs). It's hard after all. But I am encouraged by the visible results and do my best. I am continuing to do it now that I am in Tokyo. I had a gym introduced to me, so I connect with a trainer online and train regularly.

Currently Trying “Gut Healing”

── I heard that you are also particular about your diet and inner care.

What I am currently working on is called “Gut Healing.” Have you ever heard of it? In order to improve the function of internal organs (gut) such as the stomach, liver, and intestines, I am trying to improve my diet under the guidance of a specialist. What I am working on is gluten-free and dairy-free. I will spend six months carefully learning what foods are most likely to burden my internal organs. Because I spend a lot of time learning how to eat foods that are less burdensome on my internal organs, it is also called the “Gut Healing Journey.” I think it's exactly like a “journey.” Improving your diet and taking care of your body from the inside takes time. Even if you only pay attention to your diet for a day or two, you won't see any results.

── It's amazing that you do weight training three times a week and improve your diet! What made you start being conscious of your health, Che’Nelle?

Since I was in my 20s, I had a vague feeling that I wanted to be healthy. I wanted to maintain a healthy appearance. But when I was young, I didn't know what to do to achieve that at all, and I didn't take any particular action to do so. There was a time when I spent my days partying!

I had a major turning point when I was 23 years old. When I was on a plane to New York, I became very ill at the connecting airport. My stomach hurt so much, I had a high fever, and I was rushed to the hospital locally. I had various tests done, including blood tests, but I was in a lot of pain during that time. The diagnosis was “ulcerative colitis.” It was a really painful experience. That experience was the reason why I started to take wellness seriously. That's where my journey to gain knowledge about health began. Until then, when I felt sick, I relied on antibiotics and only used temporary measures to improve my condition. I think I just didn't have any knowledge. The illness made me face “things I hadn't done before” and I started learning a lot about health. For sleep, I researched how many hours I should sleep and when I should sleep, and for workouts, I researched training methods that suit me instead of doing them aimlessly. That journey is still continuing.

About TENTIAL

── You have been wearing TENTIAL's sleepwear since you came to Japan. What are your thoughts on it?

I was surprised at how soft the material was! It's so soft that my body feels like it's melting! My first impression was, how do they make such soft fabric!? I was that impressed. To be honest, my life has been very chaotic since I came to Japan, and my theme has been “how to recover.” I am so glad that I was able to encounter this sleepwear at such a time. Creating a good sleep environment is very important.

Che’Nelle says that she has been using it since she came to Japan.

It's light and comfortable, so I use it as everyday wear. I recently traveled from Osaka, where I had an event, to Tokyo on the Shinkansen, and I wore it the whole time. I would recommend it as functional wear for people who travel a lot like me. Also, I wore TENTIAL pants when I worked out the other day, and they were easy to move in. I think TENTIAL's wear is great not only for athletes but also for people who need rest. It's so comfortable that just wearing it makes your time at home a peaceful space, and it makes you feel gentle.

The new song “I AM,” with Japanese lyrics, which will be released on December 13, 2023, for the first time in six years, is about how she rediscovered “love for herself” after experiencing marriage and childbirth. “Ame no Sei” and “I AM (English Version)” are also included. We can't take our eyes off her future activities as she resumes her activities in Japan.
